The present day success of the textile industry follows decades of intensive work and research that began due to the success of vinalon production in Hamhung, which kickstarted its growth into a model socialist industrial city. When vinalon production became a success, the vinalon chemists’ proposal to locate North Korean chemists in Hamhung resulted in the formation of an integrated coalition for chemical industry and research that includes universities such as the National Academy of Science. The significant role that the Hamhung industries played in overcoming the famine when it struck in the 1990s is testament to its resilience 8.
