The vinalon industry is the shining fruition that the Juche idea of our Party was reflected in the field of chemical industry.11
- Kim II Sung

The opening of a large-scale textile factory is a matter of great national pride. During the Chollima movement of national industrialisation, the textile industry performed outstandingly due to the production of the vinalon. North Korea then rose to become one of the largest producers of vinalon in the world, at least until the mid-1980s.

The opening of the Vinalon Factory in Hamhung was woven into the industrial narrative as heralding a new era of socialist revolution that is powered by productivity in the factories. The vinalon fabric itself was named the “juche fabric” by Kim II Sung. “Juche”, which translates literally to “subject”, stands for self-reliance. Created by North Koreans using domestic resources and technology,  the invention of the fabric became synonymous with the regime’s narrative of socialist attainment. Hardier than nylon and lighter than cotton, vinalon was used in everything from paper, tires, agricultural tools, and work clothes 10.
